Infinite Reality looks to be a thought
provoking book set for release on April 5 2011, written by Jeremy Bailenson and published by Harper Collins, Inc. The book’s introductory chapter is an interesting discussion about the psychological effects that “virtual reality” or virtual worlds and the avatars which inhabit them have upon us. The author discusses how avatars allow users to be more confident, and even allows Second Life users with physical disabilities to live life where they aren’t disabled. But avatars have also been used for more to harm others, by deceiving others into fake friendships (think a fake “friending” on Facebook with someone) and even perpetrating virtual sexual assault. The author states that as more people interact in “virtual reality” or online these psychological affect will only increase the affect on our human nature. There can be no doubt that you’ve experience some form of frustration when the “toon” you were playing was killed by a “mob”, or you experience joy when your avatar’s image made someone accept your friend request on Facebook. The introductory chapter is a great read, and will definitely get you thinking.
